It's All About the Dress

 

 

Unless you live under a rock somewhere in Outer Mongolia, you are probably aware that the Oscars were on last night.  I will come clean by saying I did not watch a single minute of the show.  As I get crankier in my old age, I find I just really can't stomach the entertainers that suddenly think they have all the answers and that we must listen to their opinion simply because they have the microphone and may have done a good job acting in some film or other.  I am, however, still a sucker for the glamour of it all and love to see the fashion choices made for the red carpet.  Therefore, you will be subjected to yet another "Best and Worst" dressed list...mine! 

Best

 

Yes, I might be a tad biased because I am firmly a memeber of "Team Aniston".  You can read how I feel about Brad Pitt here.  That being said, I do think she looks very fresh and that the gown is very flattering to her.  Also, I am so glad she decided to skip her usual black and go for something completely different.

 

Again, I felt Ms. Hathaway looked fresh and elegant.  Not too overdone, just lovely.

 

Taraji Henson looked fantastic.  Loved the dress, loved the hair, loved the jewelry...a terrific total package.

Worst

This year, my worst list could have gone on and on.  I really felt a little let down by many of the choices this year, but here a few that really stood out, and not in a good way.

 

I really don't even know what to say to this other than YUCK!

 

Congratulations to Melissa Leo for being nominated, but is this really the best she could do for her big night?  The color matches her hair way too closely and the sihouette is just frumpy personified.

 

I have to admit that I don't even know who Melissa George is, and I will also admit that I have seen this dress on more than one "Best Dressed" list.  For me, it was just a little too over the top and not elegant at all.

Last, but not least:

 

I love a good comeback story as much as the next guy, but honestly...do you think he smells as bad as he looks like he does? I would think a shower would be a given on Oscar night, but maybe it's just me.

Facebook...Real Friend or Frenemy?

  Are you on Facebook?  I am and I must say that it really is quite surreal.  Suddenly I find myself in touch with people I haven't seen or even thought about in 20 or more years.  I  have even connected with the very first friend I ever remember having.  It is a bit like a high school reunion everyday.  Now, I enjoyed my reunion very much, but some of those old feelings of insecurity did creep in every now and then through the evening.  Therefore, I have to keep my guard up to ward off any insecurities the old ties might bring up on Facebook.  Also, it shows its frenemy side with all the time it can suck out of your day...consider yourself warned.  All in all, I would say it is mostly a friend.   A positive and fun, if a bit time warpish, way to keep in touch with new and old friends alike.  It is really uplifting to see how well most people are doing and sharing a little of their lives with them.  And guess what?  Memes aren't just for blogs anymore.  There are several memes going around Facebook right now as we speak, so I was tagged and I have answered.  If you are in need of some blog fodder please feel free to play along.

25 Random Things About Me

1. I have a great memory. Most of the time this is good, but sometimes it is not so great if I am remembering something sad or embarrassing as the emotions come back too not just a picture of the event.
2. I have slept with a fan in my room since I was about 10. Now my husband can't sleep without one either, and both my kids have fans in their room.
3. I am in the process of writing the next great american novel, or a novel anyway.
4. I am an avid reader, and go through at least a book a week.
5. I have always been painfully shy. It is getting slightly better as I get older as I become more comfortable with me and try to set a good example for my kids, but not sure it will ever go away completely.
6. I ran my first 3 5ks in 2008. I was inspired by my 10 year old son who ran them too and beat me everytime. Oh well, at least my time improved each time and I crossed the finish line running.
7. My true passion is dancing and if I could figure out how to get myself on "Dancing with the Stars" I would do it in a second.
8. I realize #5 would seem to be in contrast with #7, but somehow my shyness doesn't carry over to performing or public speaking.
9. I once gave a speech to an audience of 15,000 people.
10. I absolutely cannot stand speaker phone.
11. I would live my college years differently if I had to do it over again, but probably not for the reason you would think.
12. I always try to do too much with the time I have, therefore, I am frequently running just a tad late.
13. I would like to be more punctual.
14. I am a peacekeeper and tend to avoid conflict if at all possible.
15. I suffer from insomnia. Not every night, but more often than I would like.
16. My husband and I have been together for almost 20 years. We have been through times of war and peace, laughter and tears, victory and defeat, etc., but he is my best friend and there is no one else I would want to take this journey with.
17. My children are the greatest joy in my life. I feel so blessed for the opportunity to be their mom and am grateful for them every minute of everyday.
18. I am trying to become more laid back...not easy for a quilt ridden, perfectionist, worrier like me, but I'm trying.
19. I wish that my family and I were living on Hilton Head Island right now.
20. My mom is my best girlfriend.
21. When we met, my husband was a sweet tooth and I loved salty snacks like chips. Over the years we have convinced each other of the merits of both sweet and salty and now we both are both.
22. I have to work out more now than I used to, see #21, but I love the Hip Hop, Latin Dance, and yoga classes at my gym.
23. My favorite food is sushi.
24. I love playing games.
25. After this I have finished this list I will think of 700 more interesting or witty things I could have said and I will probably lose sleep over it, but not as much as I once would have...see #15 and #18.

Show Me the Bag

I have been tagged.  Yes, once again I will be thanking Jenny at  Chased by Children for the contents of today's post.  She has tagged me for a fun little MeMe, in which we get to show off the purse/diaperbag/catchall we are currently sporting.  I am past the diaper bag stage, and although I do think my current purse is quite cute, it most certainly falls into the catchall category.  Just over the weekend had you looked in my purse you would have found a pair of dance shoes, a couple of bags of Bunny Grahams, a bottle of water, and all things necessary for coloring during a brother's basketball game, ice pack for son's heel after basketball game.  Not to mention, of course, my wallet, lipsticks, and car keys.

1) Post a picture of whatever bag you are carrying as of late. No, you cannot go up to your closet and pull out that cute little purse you used back before you had kids. I want to know what you carried today.

2) I want to know how much it cost :) And this is not to judge. This is for entertainment purposes only. So spill it. And if there is a story to go along with how you obtained it, I’d love to hear it.

Without further ado, I am currently carrying the Nicole by Nicole Miller 'Kyra' Multi-color Hobo bag.  I purchased it at the ever chic Jaques Penney in October in honor of my birthday.  It was origianlly around $79.00, but I got it on sale for approx. $50.00.

I Just Don't Care

  

Is that wrong?  I guess my fuddy duddiness is showing, because I just can't bring myself to care a rat's patooty about these reality "celebritieses".  If someone could explain to me exactly why it is that they are famous, or what their redeeming qualities are, than maybe.  now...I just don't get it, and I just don't care. 

The Sexiest Man Alive?

 

People says Hugh Jackman is the sexiest man alive.   I'm good with that, how about you?

Sexiest Bachelor of 2008?

People Magazine has revealed its list of 2008's sexiest bachelors.  Who is number 1?  It is none other than "Saved by the Bell" and "Dancing with the Stars" alum, Mario Lopez.

Do you agree?  I've got to say that I do not.  Obviously he has a nicely toned body and his face is kind of boyishly cute.  However, he is a notorious cheater.  There is nothing LESS sexy to me than a wondering man.  What do you think?

Britney and Jamie Lynn's brother Bryan, because what that family needs is more media attention

and Bret Michaels, because apparently he is still a bachelor even after 2 seasons of the ever fabulous "Rock of Love".  Is this a commentary on the girls on the show or a commentary on Bret? An interesting question to be sure.

Have You Seen It?

I am a devoted Sex and the City fan, however, due to circumstances beyond my control ( you know being wife, mother, business owner, laundress, chef, etc. etc.) I have not yet seen the movie.  Have you?  If so did you love it?  Were you satisfied or did it leave you wanting more?  Did you go with gal pals or on a date night?  Give me the scoop, but no spoilers please...I am still hoping to catch it on the big screen instead of from NetFlix!

The Catalyst for Change

  I know you all have been waiting with bated breath to find out if Slash has finally managed to get clean and become the more "down to earth" guy I thought I heard being interviewed.  The answer, at least as of the writing of the book, is yes, but it was a long time in coming.  The book was 457 pages long, and I believe he got truly clean on about page 450.  He had some half hearted attempts here and there throughout the book, but the final time seems to be the one that he was most committed to during the process.  It also seems that he actually wants to be successful at being clean this time.

What was the catalyst that finally caused him to want to change?

Was it having his heart stop beating for approximately 8 minutes after many hours of hard drug and alcohol use?  Don't be silly.  In fact, a few short hours after the incident, he checked himself out of the hospital (against medical advice, obviously), found a bottle of Jack Daniel's, cracked it open, and had a drink.

Was it the time in Arizona when he was extremely messed up on heroin and cocaine, and was having hallucinations about little mean, nasty "gremlins" out to get him.  He believed so truly that they were trying to kill him, he smashed through a glass shower door, ran across the glass...cutting his feet badly, ran out the door of the bungalow where he was staying (still naked from the shower mind you), and proceeded to run all over the grounds and lobby of the hotel for quite a long time before being subdued by one of his managers?  Not so much.

Was it the time that he checked himself into the hospital because he wasn't feeling very well, only to be told that he had done so much damage to his heart with drugs and alcohol that he had about 6 days to 6 weeks to live if he didn't have a defibrillator implanted in his chest immediately?  Surely, you jest.

All of the above did happen, but the event(s) that finally helped him find the strength to get clean was something much more powerful than any of those incidents.  What finally helped him was the birth of his children (2 boys).  It didn't happen right away, but he finally realized that his love for his children was stronger than his desire to continue his self destructive behavior.  His boys are beautiful and I hope their dad really means it this time, because they need him in their lives.

I can't say that I wholeheartedly recommend the book.  It was quite disturbing at points and did get bogged down in some technical music mumbo jumbo, but it was rather interesting in a morbid curiosity kind of way.  It also gave quite an illuminating look into the music industry.  Slash and his behavior were definitely the rule not the exception.  In fact, almost without exception, all the bands discussed in the book lived lives of total debauchery...very far removed from the suburbs to be sure.  Also, I don't think I would be going out on a limb to say that Slash is a much better guitar player than he is an author.  I did appreciate his candor, however, and I am hopeful, as I already mentioned, that the cleanliness sticks for the sake of his kids.

So How Old is He?

The majority of you guessed that Mr. Plant was somewhere in his sixties or early seventies (there were a couple of younger votes, but this was by far the majority), and that he looked pretty good for that age.  I would agree with you that he looks good for late sixties/ early seventies if in fact he were that old. However, he is not in either of these two age categories.  He is still in his fifties, not for much longer, but he is still holding on to that category for a few more months.  He is 59, born August 20, 1948.  Looks like someone has been ridden hard and put up wet a few too many times...just a guess.

Some inquiring minds also wanted to know the age of Ms. Krauss.  She was born in 1971, making her much closer to my own age than I would have guessed.  I think this makes me feel better about my own age since, as you may recall, I referred to her as "fresh faced".

Wanna Play a Game?

Now, don't get yourself all in a froth, I am not actually giving anything away with this particular game, just having a little fun.  Fear not, however, more giveaways to come I assure you.  Anyway, back to today's game.  Does anyone remember the carnival or amusement park game where someone tries to guess your age?  Well today, you are the guesser and Robert Plant is the guessee.  Apparently it has become the unofficial classic rock week with the Diva here at Sayanything, what with my post about Slash earlier this week and now this.  Hey, when blog fodder presents itself, far be it from me to ignore it.

Robert Plant (former lead singer of Led Zeppelin, just in case you didn't know) has recently released a CD with Allison Krauss and I stumbled across this publicity photo of the two of them, and the carnival game was born.   So, take a look at the picture and leave me a comment on how old you think Robert Plant is, and no fair looking up the answer anywhere, just guess!  It probably doesn't help that he is standing next to the fresh faced Krauss, but give it your best shot.  If you win, you will have the satisfaction of being a "winner" for the day, which probably beats the stuffed animal you would have won at an actual carnival.  I'll post his real age tomorrow.
